Mill Pond's Rich History

  • Mill Pond was created in the late 1700s, when a group of investors built a dam across the existing creek.  The investors then built a tide-powered grist mill on the site, near the present-day culvert.  Mills operated on Mill Pond and Mill Creek until about 1860, grinding mainly corn and rye grown in Truro.   More information about the Truro Tide Mill is available on the website of the Tide Mill Institute and in video presentations to the Truro Historical Society and the Friends of the Truro Meeting House.   Links to those materials are provided below.

  • Mill Pond Road, itself, was built on top of the existing dam at some point between 1848 and 1858.  The proprietors then entered into an agreement with the town for maintenance of the dam and road.

  • The Mill Pond tidal flow restoration project will require excavation at or near the site of the Truro Tide Mill and should therefore include an archaeological component.

Mill Pond, the Road and Historical Values

If our history doesn't matter, what does? Mill Pond Culvert East Side near where the original Grist Mill was located. Disrupting this area should include archaeological investigation.

A beautiful, old, historic road with fantastic marsh and bay views. One of the few water-front drives in Truro.
